HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY: Winslow has final answer
What a wild Class B state championship game here at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston. The Black Raiders squandered a three-goal lead in the final 6:20 only to storm back and win it in overtime on senior Nick Thorne's goal. The Raiders now have 11 Class B state titles.
For two periods Saturday, the Raiders were the much better team. They were deeper, too, as coach Corey Lessard skated three lines the entire game. But the Wildcats, playing in their first state title game, did what good teams do: fight back. The Wildcats blitzed the Raiders and sent this arena into a frenzy.
You had to wonder if Winslow didn't have the benefit of skating eight seniors whether or not it would be able to recover in overtime.
"That was important," Lessard said.
"Oh my God, it was crazy," added Sean Bourgeois, who was terrific after a self-described lackluster performance in the Eastern B title game against Gardiner. "We saw them coming back and we had to maintain our composure."
They did, and because of it are state champions. Again.
