Why two Players of the Year?
This year, for the first time, two players were named Kennebec Journal Boys Basketball Co-Players of the Year. It was not a decision made lightly.
Both Maranacook's Ryan Martin and Winthrop's Sam Leclerc were named co-players because of the exceptional seasons they had. Martin led his team to the Class B state title while Leclerc led the Ramblers to the Class C championship. Both were named regional tournament MVPs and were also their conferences' Players of the Year.
Oh yeah, they were both finalists for Mr. Maine Basketball, an award won by Martin.
Martin averaged 23 points a game and Leclerc 21. Statistical comparisons don't tell the whole story of these two players, nor do championships and awards.
What separates them from others in the area and around the state is their inspirational work ethic. While many players put in extra work to improve, few spend the hours and hours before and after practice that these two have and continue to do.
