High school sports web site improvements

We are planning some improvements to the way we cover Maine high school sports on the newspapers' web sites.

Between the two central Maine papers — the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel — we track about 30 high schools' athletic programs. Add our sister paper to the south — the Portland Press Herald — and that number more than doubles.

We will work together with our friends and teammates in Portland to improve the way high school sports news appears online. We need some help and input as we get ready to launch this project.

I would like to hear from you — fans, coaches, athletes, the administrators, parents and readers. What would you like to see on our high school sports web site?

Here are some questions we've been asking members of the high school sports community:

1. How closely do you follow high school sports in the local media?

2. Do you have a preference when it comes to consumption of high school sports coverage - in the newspaper? On TV? On the web?

3. Are you solely looking for information on your team (or the team you follow) or do you follow other high school sports teams and results?

4. What kind of information are you looking for - stories, opinions, stats, standings, video, predictions, other information?

5. Are you generally satisfied or dissatisfied with the coverage of Maine high school sports?

6. If you had the power, what would you change and how would you make it better?

7. On a scale of 1 to 10, please rate the importance of the following items in terms of high school sports coverage on the web:

• Game coverage and live summaries, box scores

• Thorough and searchable team pages

• Player profile pages

• Updated statistics by team

• Updated statistics by player

• Thorough and searchable calender of events

• The ability to connect with others through profiles and instant messaging

• The ability to share your opinion through chat rooms (forums), blogs and an interactive community devoted to high school sports
