FOOTBALL: Can high school teams benefit from Colby's new field?
While Colby head football coach Ed Mestieri wouldn't go into specifics, on Wednesday he said he hopes the new artificial turf soon to be installed at Seaverns Field will entice some of the area high schools to play a game on the Waterville campus.
"At some point, maybe the high schools can be involves," Mestieri said.
It's unlikely the Colby football team will play many games under the stadium's new lights. Travel in the New England Small College Athletic Conference is tough enough without starting a game after dark and getting home in the wee hours. But what if Waterville and Winslow wanted to play their annual rivalry game under the lights? Colby would be the perfect spot.
Years ago, Colby hosted many Pine Tree Conference championship games. It's doubtful that a higher seed would want to give up the home field advantage that comes with hosting the game now, but if weather made high school fields unplayable, the artificial turf at Seaverns would be a solid option.
With gas prices climbing ever higher, how long would the MPA continue the Super Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland? While having all three state championship games at one site is nice, will having the games in Portland, not exactly a centrally located city, continue to make sense?
What if the MPA finally decides to go to four classes in football? Can you squeeze four games into one site in one day?
With artifcial turf going in at Colby, the state will have three football stadiums - Fitzpatrick, Seaverns and Husson College's Winkin Complex - within minutes of I-95, that could host games in any weather. If nothing else, Colby is an option should the MPA decide to split up the state title games.
