Moose open tryouts
Plenty of local high school hockey players came out Friday night for the first of three Maine Moose tryouts.
In all, 34 players showed up for the Friday night session, which was far less than Maine Moose Super Elite coach Glenn Carey wanted. It was an interesting night.
Elite coach Chad Foye ran the players through several drills, including two-on-ones and corner play. New Super Elite assistant coach Ben Gray kept a close eye on the goalies, and said he liked what he saw — from a few anyway. Zach Parent (Messalonskee), Ryan Cormier (Winslow) and Chris Howe (Gardiner) all saw plenty of action between the pipes.
Other local players who came out included: Sean Bourgeois (Winslow), Derek Lizzotte (Winslow), Nick Bourgoin (Winslow), Jake Levesque (Win-Dale), Derek Brotherton (Cony), and Kyle Martin (Maranacook-Monmouth). Andy Harrington, who will likely serve as captain of the Super Elite team, also attended.
The best players on the ice Friday night were Houlton-Hodgdon forward Morgan Hall and Bourgeois. Hall can flat-out skate, making several end-to-end rushes that impressed Moose evaluators.
Many of the players shared different views on whether they would continue to play high school hockey or not. Some, like Winslow goalie Ryan Cormier and Maranacook-Monmouth forward Kyle Martin, say they will give up the high school game and skate primarily for the Moose. Others, like Cony defenseman Derek Brotherton, say they will try to do both.
“Yeah, I’m going to split,” Brotherton said. “I want to try and do both. I think I can do it.”
Carey said he expects at least 12 more players to show Saturday for Day 2 of the tryouts, including standout Brunswick forward Blaine Cardali.
