A LOOK BACK, AHEAD

A few leftovers from the week of May 4 and a look ahead.

Winthrop shortstop David Ricker, in some respects, has played in the shadow of Gardiner shortstop Kyle Stilphen, but both seniors can play the position well. While Stilphen is headed to Div. 1 UMaine next season, Ricker will play at the University of Southern Maine, one of the top Div. III schools in the nation. Like Stilphen, Ricker can make all the defensive plays — from the hole and charging the ball and throwing on the run — and he can hit, too. As a matter of fact, both players batted an even .500 last season.

Cony’s McGuire Field is the best venue for baseball in the area for a number of reasons, foremost the atmosphere and excitement surrounding the game. Pregame music is followed by introduction of players and coaches, then the national anthem. Players are introduced before each at-bat and a recap follows each inning. The snack bar is handy and fully stocked and there are five different seating areas from which to watch — behind home plate, along each baseline and in right and left field. At Wednesday’s game against Oxford Hils, there were fans (about 200 in all) sitting in every set of bleachers.

Gardiner suffered its first loss, 2-1 to Lincoln Academy on Friday, setting up a big week in Class B. Before that, Winthrop hosts Lisbon in a key Mountain Valley Conference matchup on Monday. Both teams are 5-1. On Wednesday, Maranacook travels to Oak Hill for a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B game, then Oak Hill plays at Gardiner on Friday. All three teams are 5-1.

Hey Gary, Lincoln Academy won tonight against Waterville...6 to 5. They won with a walk off double by Eric Morganer...They were behind 5 to 1 at the bottom of the 7th and Waterville thought they had it!!! They are comeback kids!! They also started a freshman pitcher, Brandon Reilly and a freshman catcher Jeff Lamb...they did a great JOB. Some of the calls were questionable..but hey, that's baseball!! They are now 7-2 and for a team that had no recognition and an assumption of no talent, they are having a great season!
