Key softball matchups on tap

First, thanks to all of you who clicked on this after reading the high school notebook in the Morning Sentinel. Second, as promised, here's a look at some of the biggest games over the next several days:

Friday: Brewer at Skowhegan. This game was switched from Thursday because of senior academic achievement awards ceremonies at both schools. It's a fun matchup to look at because Skowhegan is one of the best 5-5 teams you could find. In Rebecca McCarty, the Indians have a pitcher who can keep Skowhegan in the game against anyone. The Indians lost 3-0 to heavy-hitting Bangor and 2-1 to Brewer earlier this season. Still, Skowhegan must prove that it can get its offense going against a top-notch pitcher. The Indians will get that chance against Brewer.

Monday: Erskine at Oak Hill. The first of a group of games this week involving KVAC B powers Erskine, Maranacook, Oak Hill and Winslow. Oak Hill is coming off a 4-0 victory over Maranacook in which they got 10 hits off Maranacook standout Sarah Maxwell. The Raiders will need to bring their bats again when they face Erskine sophomore Sammy Morse, who hasn't allowed more than two runs in a game all season (Erskine's two losses are 2-1 to Winslow and 1-0 to Medomak). If Oak Hill pitcher Brittany Wood is on the mound, this could be a great pitcher's duel. Another game worth watching is Maine Central Institute at Medomak Valley, as it's one of the last chances for MCI to pick up a big amount of Heal points.

Wednesday: Oak Hill at Winslow. Monday's game will determine how Oak Hill enters this contest. Will the Raiders be euphoric after a victory against another quality opponent, or down after a tough loss? It's a chance for Oak Hill to make a statement, and for that matter, for Winslow to make one too. Winslow has been the No. 1 team in the KVAC B for what seems like 15 years now, and there's a feeling that the gap isn't quite as wide this year. Oak Hill is certainly in a position to help itself out come playoff seeding time, with this being the third of three big games in a span of eight days.

Also on Wednesday, Maranacook is at Erskine. Amazingly, all these fine teams are playing each other in such a short time span. Maranacook has a win over Medomak, which will definitely be worth a lot of points, and will be gunning for another quality win here. Both teams are young and have sophomore pitchers (Maxwell for Maranacook and Morse for Erskine).

Friday: Maranacook at Winslow. Both teams are young, strong and have an excellent 1-4 batting order. While Maxwell is a sophomore, Winslow has senior Katie Knowlen on the mound. It will be interesting to see how much the addition of Jill Smith affects Winslow's lineup. The Black Raiders have been struggling a bit on offense, and Smith may be just what they need to make everyone's job a little easier. Maranacook will also be looking to show it can get its bats going against a top pitcher.

In reference to the Maranacock/Oak Hill game. Maranacock gave up 6 hits and created 4 errors. Don't know why it was reported as 10 hits
