SOFTBALL: Erskine plays wild third inning
The Erskine Academy softball team dropped a 4-3 decision to Belfast Area High School on Friday in a game that featured a few unusual twists and turns — all in the third inning.
In the top of the third, the Eagles were already trailing 2-0 and Belfast was threatening for more when Domonique Haver stepped into the batter’s box with runners on first and third and only one out.
Haver then ripped a high pitch to first baseman Ashley Richardson, who fired home to get Vicki Overlook at the plate.
Erskine catcher Rachael Siegfriedt then threw out Brianna Webster at third to turn the rare 3-2-5 double play.
In the bottom of the inning, Erskine leadoff hitter Ashley Peaslee hit a one-out single that went off Belfast pitcher Overlook’s glove.
On the next pitch, Peaslee swiped second. The Eagles, trailing 2-0, finally had a rally going.
However, Siegfriedt followed with a popup along the first-base line. Overlook ran to the baseline, and just as she moved in to make the catch Siegfriedt barreled into her to force the ball out.
The umpires initially didn’t rule anything, but on the urging of Lions coach Chris Bartlett, they huddled and ruled Siegfriedt out on runner interference. Erskine coach Mike Soule, as one can imagine, wasn’t too pleased.
No matter, the Eagles still tied the game with clutch two-out hits from Sam Morse and Ericka Malley.
