Oak Hill-Winslow softball
It was a crazy day at LaVerdiere Field Wednesday afternoon as Winslow hosted Oak Hill. There were four home runs (or five, depending on who was keeping score), a bizarre play in the infield, and one of the shortest rain delays on record.
The four home runs were two by Winslow's Jill Smith, one by Winslow's Katie Caron and another by Oak Hill's Cadie Rodrigue. Three of the four were hit to left field and the other was hit to left-center. Caron also scored after her fly ball was dropped after a long run. I called it an error, but the Winslow book had it as a home run.
In cases like that, one of the tests I use to determine hit or error is, "What would the fielder say?" In this case, I think the fielder would say she should have had the ball.
There was a weird play in the second inning with Oak Hill leading 3-1 and courtesy runner Ashley Pulk on first with one out. Becca Roberts slapped a ground ball to Caron at shortstop, and at the last second, the ball took a bad hop and struck Caron in the chest, snapping her upper body backward. Caron was fine, and the ball rolled right to second baseman Lindsay Gordon, who was standing on second base for the forceout.
It had been raining most of the game when home plate umpire Jeff Marshall said, "We're going to take a little break," after the last out of the fifth inning. That was at 5:16. At 5:19, the Winslow defense was back on the field getting ready for the top of the sixth.
