TRACK: Cony Invitational a success
The annual Cony Invitational was held under the lights Friday and what a day it was.
First came a cold rain, then a little sun that produced a rainbow, then more rain, and finally some hail. Some pieces were as big as moth balls, and it made for an interesting day on the track.
The Cony girls won the meet with 144 points, beating out Lisbon by a point. Bethany Dumas won three events and Mackenzie Dufour two to help lead the Rams. The Lisbon boys, who were simply too deep and talented for anyone to challenge, scored 214 points. Maranacook finished second with 104 points.
Max HoddWells of Maranacook and Laura Peterson of Hall-Dale each won four events to earn top individual honors of the day. Peterson won the closest race of the evening, the 200. She edged Dufour by one-hundredth of a second thanks to an out-stretched head and shoulder.
HoddWells set a school record in an event he says he rarely practices the triple jump.
More observations/thoughts from the day:
The meet was well-run, with no noticeable hiccups. Several coaches commented afterward how smooth the meet went. Its not easy to run a meet with 20 teams, but the folks at Cony pulled it off.
For the last event of the day the 4x400 relays Erskine Academy set up cheering sections in each corner of the track to root on their runners. Despite an oval cheering section, the Eagles finished second in each event.
Hall-Dale coach Ralph Peterson, while awaiting the results, started rattling off numbers and said he counted up 82 points in his head for his girls squad. The Bulldogs finished with 85. Thats impressive.
Speaking of impressive, 36 boys competed in the 1,600; 27 in the 3,200.
