Maranacook-Winslow softball
I saw a wild and exciting KVAC B softball game Friday afternoon. Maranacook beat Winslow 2-1 in eight innings. You hear a final score like that and you naturally think there weren't a lot of scoring chances. This game was just the opposite.
Both teams kept chipping away before and after scoring in the third inning. In the first six innings, there was one 1-2-3 inning combined on both sides. Maranacook made several nice defensive plays, including a grab-and-shovel-to-first by second baseman Amanda Laporte, two nice catches after long runs by left fielder Brooke Skidgel, and a catch in foul territory by first baseman Shelley Ouellette.
The most interesting play of the game took place in the top of the sixth inning. Laporte singled and went to second on an error with nobody out. Skidgel followed with a ground ball up the middle, and Laporte hesitated and then ran back to second.
The ball hit Laporte just before she hit the bag, and Winslow coach Terry Parlin and the Winslow fans wanted an interference call. Things got so heated that the home plate umpire turned and told one of the fans to just be a fan instead of criticizing the umpiring.
The umps finally ruled that the ball hit Laporte when she was behind Winslow shortstop Katie Caron, meaning, essentially, no harm and no foul. Laporte stayed at second -- the Winslow fans were still talking about the play after the game -- but Winslow pitcher Katie Knowlen got the next three batters to end the inning without a run.
