TRACK AND FIELD: Hello, conference meets

Finally, the conference track and field meets are upon us. It’s the moment these student-athletes have been training for since Day 1.

The Mountain Valley Conference will crown its boys and girls champ Friday at Cony High School at 4 p.m. The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference A and B meets are Saturday at McMann Field in Bath. Those meets begin at 9 a.m.

The weather forecast for Saturday is ominous — showers early with potential clearing later in the afternoon.

Cony coach Shawn Totman says he’s been told to expect the meets to go on, regardless of Mother Nature’s plans.

The rain would certainly impact times (sprinters hate the stuff), but Totman summed things up succinctly when asked how it would affect his Rams.

“If it rains, it won’t just rain on Cony,” he said.

Good point.

But if it rains, it would dampen arguably the best events in the KVAC B — the 110 and 300 hurdles. In those races, Maranacook Community School senior Max HoddWells would square off against Waterville Senior High junior Dominik Alexis.

The two are not only the best hurdlers in the conference, but in the state as well. Waterville coach Ian Wilson said he’s been tracking HoddWells’ times all season, and all season those times just got better and better.

“It’s going to be terrific,” Wilson said.

Other events to watch over the weekend, beginning with the MVC today:

• Hall-Dale High School’s Ariel Howes is seeded first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.35. But she’s going to be pushed by Kelley Baickle of Lisbon. Howes’ seed time is about a second faster.

• Jake Longfellow of Hall-Dale and Nick Caldwell of Carrabec are the top two seeds, respectively, in the 110 hurdles.

• Danny Soltan of Winthrop and Wade Davis of Hall-Dale will meet again in the 1,600. Davis finished about three seconds behind Soltan at the Cony Invitational last week.

• In the boys high jump, Kyle Huston of Lisbon, Larry Foster of Winthrop and Jeff Richards of Madison all bring a 6-foot, 3-inch seed mark to the meet. Something has to give.

• Madison features the top two boys pole vaulters in the MVC — Sam Perkins and George McLean.

• In KVAC B, the girls 200 should also be tight. Leavitt sophomore Allison Fereshitian, Waterville junior Anna Thurston and Waterville freshman Katie Massey all have legitimate shots to win the event.
Wilson says Fereshitian is legit and will be a force to reckon with. Stay tuned.

• Alexis should continue his run of close calls when he challenges Wilbur Fogg of Belfast in the 200.

• Waterville’s Zach Jordan and Erskine Academy’s Steven Morissette should put on a show in the 400. Morissette enters the race with a seed time of 51.96. Jordan clocks in at 51.87. Wilson says he thinks Jordan can shave a second off his time.

• In KVAC A, the girls 400 features five athletes, including Cony sophomore Mackenzie Dufour, whose seed times are separated by less than a second.
