SOFTBALL: Erskine overpowering
The Erskine Academy softball team completed another step Tuesday in its remarkable turnaround from a year ago. The Eagles, who finished 4-12 last season in Eastern A, advanced to the Eastern B quarterfinals with a 4-0 victory over Maine Central Institute in South China.
The Eagles (12-5) start six seniors.
“It’s unbelievable,” sophomore pitcher Samantha Morse said.
So was Morse on Tuesday. She allowed just one hit and struck out 14 in a complete-game gem. She threw 115 pitches, 70 for strikes.
The Eagles pushed two runs across in the third inning, and you got the sense the game was over at that point. Erskine coach Mike Soule certainly likes his team’s chances in any game with a 2-0 lead and Morse on the mound. When the Eagles went ahead 3-0 in the fourth, Soule knew this one was just about over.
“When we got that third run, I felt pretty comfortable,” he said.
Also of note in the game: Both catchers — Rachel Siegfriedt of Erskine and Kristen Sousa of MCI — each threw out a runner trying to steal in the first inning.
