BASEBALL: Weather, defense hamper game
The Western C prelim baseball game between Monmouth Academy and Telstar was delayed 52 minutes because of lightning strikes in the area. The game was first stopped for lightning at 6:38 p.m. with a runner on third and two outs in the top of the seventh inning. It started again at 7:30 p.m. and the inning ended after one pitch when Monmouth Devin Robbins reliever Devin Robbins finished a strikeout.
Tuesday's game was already a long one at that point, as the two teams had combined for 11 errors. Monmouth made seven, including two in the first inning that helped account for a 4-0 deficit which the Mustangs never recovered from.
Telstar shook up its line for Tuesday's prelim game, batting four seniors at the top of the line up and the move paid off. Leadoff hitter Andy Whitney and No. 2 hitter Kyle Maines each scored a run and drove in a run, while cleanup hitter Gavin Broomhall scored two runs.
"That was the first time we've used that lineup," Telstar coach Bob Remington said.
The Mustangs, meanwhile, had three seniors at the top of its lineup and their starting pitcher (Josh Boisvert) was a senior. Devin Robbins, Ronnie Hobson and Erik Murphy combined for two runs, two RBIs and three base hits on Tuesday.
"Three of them have been there for three years," Monmouth coach Eric Palleschi said. "Boisvert threw a ton of innings for us this year."
