HOCKEY: Moose to host summer tourney

Yes, it’s been humid and hot, but if you’re a hockey fanatic or just looking to chill out then then the Kennebec Ice Arena is the place for you this weekend.

The Maine Moose, a junior team that plays at KIA, will host the Summer Rut Showcase this weekend, beginning Thursday night.

There will be five teams competing, including two Moose squads, and the rink will be filled with plenty of the area’s top players from last scholastic season.

Former Winslow standouts Sean Bourgeois and Derek Lizzotte will skate for the Moose Black team, which is comprised mostly of the organization’s Super Elite players. Andy Harrington (Richmond) and Klinton Peckham (Gardiner) will also skate for the Black team. Eric Aldrich (Waterville), Jake Levesque (Hall-Dale) and Sam Cloutier (Lewiston) will play for the Moose White team.

The round robin tournament, which concludes Sunday, also features the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs B team, Mission U-18 Prospect and the Maine Wild Weasels.

The Prospect team is comprised of players from Massachusetts and Connecticut. The Weasels are a Central Maine youth team that skates mostly high school players.

Moose Super Elite coach Glenn Carey said the Weasels will feature the following players: Klayton Peckham (Gardiner), Nick Deblois (Messalonskee), Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner), Shawn Lee (Waterville), Brett Glasheen (Messalonskee), Ian Rowe (Waterville) and Nolan Macdonnell (Waterville), among others.

The Moose Black will play the Weasels on Thursday night at 8 to open the tournament. There will be two games Friday night before the tournament gets under way in earnest Saturday with seven contests, the first beginning at 7 a.m. and the last at 7:20 p.m. The playoffs are Sunday, with the championship game at 5:30 p.m. The games are free to the public.

Teams will play two, 20-minute periods to save on ice team.
