FOOTBALL: Lobster Bowl followup

Some final notes on the 19th Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl, which the West won 24-6 last Friday night at Waterhouse Field in Biddeford:

• Former Lawrence High quarterback Jack Hersom showed why he earned the Fitzpatrick Trophy last fall with a stellar performance in the defeat. Hersom, who split the quarterbacking duties with Daniel Hussey of Waterville, was constantly under pressure from a quick and big West front.

But Hersom played with poise and he kept the East in the game. He rushed for 77 yards, including 34 in the second quarter on a couple of nice runs. He also made a nice 15-yard completion to Lance Getchell of Old Town while forced out of the pocket in the third quarter. Hersom, being chased down by a linebacker and an end, raced toward the sideline, fired off the pass, and then took a hard shot. However, he got up, smiled and pointed downfield after the first-down play.

• Former Cony defensive end Cameron O'Brien also enjoyed a strong night for the East. He finished with four tackles, including two for a loss.

• Speaking of Hussey, he played a good game, too. His big play came on a 43-yard pass to Getchell late in the third quarter. It was his only completion of the night, but it nearly went for a touchdown. Hussey also scored the East's lone touchdown on a six-yard run in the second quarter.

• Nicholas Brown, the lone Oak Hill representative, was busy in the secondary for the East. Listed at 6 foot, 1 inch, Brown was the biggest player in the East secondary. He finished with two tackles.
