Heat, game take their toll
The heat and the workload finally caught up to Belfast running back Willy Fogg on Saturday in Winslow.
The 5-foot-11, 165-pound junior had been the workhorse all afternoon for the Lions, totaling 147 yards on 31 carries. Trailing 15-10, the visiting Lions got the ball back on their own 38-yard line with 2 minutes, 32 seconds left to play. That's when Fogg went to work. He broke off tackle and down the left sideline for 25 yards with only an effort by Winslow's Scott Siviski saving a touchdown.
With temperatures just above 80 degrees, Fogg carried the ball four more times in a row, the last a tough carry for 2 yards and a first down at the W-25. Fogg would get the call on the next play, too, but as quarterback Brad Reed turned to hand off, he saw Fogg bent over and throwing up. With no one to hand the ball to, Reed took an 8-yard loss. That was it for Fogg and, for all intents, for the Lions.
"He was tired," Belfast coach Butch Richards said. "It was a hot day and it was unfortunate."
