Sportsmanship counts
Following Wednesday's game between the Winthrop and Hall-Dale boys soccer teams in Farmingdale, players gathered at midfield after the traditional handshake.
First-year Hall-Dale coach Steve Acedo said a few words to the Winthrop team and selected his choice for their MVP for the game, presenting a bottle of Gatorade to goalkeeper Cody Maitland, who was unexpectedly pressed into service.
"We decided at the beginning of the year at all our home games we're going to pick one player from each team and give him a Gatorade, just something to recognize the players," Acedo said. "To end it on a good note, even though they play hard against each other."
Winthrop coach Greg Ruby selected Hall-Dale's Kyle Bell-Colfer, who played a key role in his team's 4-0 victory.
"I think I'm going to try to bring it over to Winthrop," Ruby said. "It's an outstanding idea, a lot of sportsmanship. And allowing each coach to choose the other team's player is outstanding."
The brief ceremony gave a little more meaning to what often are perfunctory handshakes at game's end.
