FOOTBALL: Ramblers pass test with flying colors
In the first two weeks of the season, the Winthrop High School football team outscored its opponents 89-28.
In Week 1, the Ramblers started substituting in its second string in the second quarter of a 46-13 win over Traip.
In Week 2, Winthrop cruised to a 43-15 win over Yarmouth.
Week 3 against Jay was supposed to be a test. It was more like a pop quiz.
The Ramblers cruised to a 31-0 win over the Tigers on Friday night to establish themselves as the team to beat in the Campbell Conference. It was a game the Ramblers were looking forward to for a while and they handled it quite well.
"We approached (this as a test)," Winthrop defensive end Josh Confer said. "Traip and Jay were really just confidence boosters. Jay was really our first test and we came out and played hard."
Winthrop coach Joel Stoneton really wasn't sure what to expect from his team in Friday night's game because they hadn't been tested. He was pretty confident after Jake Steele ran the first play from scrimmage 55-yards for a score (it was called back) that they'd do just fine.
"For us, we are a legit team," Stoneton said. "We were just worried about what we were going to be able to do up front to protect and establish the run game and I thought we did that against a pretty decent ballclub tonight."
For Confer, the win made a statement.
"We showed Winthrop football is back and we are here to stay."
Winthrop should breeze through its schedule until an Oct. 11 matchup with Old Orchard Beach on the road. The Ramblers then travel to play Dirigo, a surprising favorite in the Mountain Valley Conference.
