Q&A session with Moe McNally
This week, I sat down with Moe McNally, the field hockey coach at Gardiner for the last 30 years. Moe's a great person to talk to about field hockey -- the senior all-star game is named after her -- but I also got a chance to talk to her about the changes in high school sports over the last 30 years.
One thing I asked Moe about was why her team has petitioned to stay in Class A. She said her players have always said they want to play at the highest level of competition. I asked her what she thought about after watching the Gardiner football and baseball teams win Class B state titles, and this was her response:
"I thought, 'Jesum criney. Have I done the right thing?' I left the baseball diamond that night. It was great for Jimmy (Palmer, the Gardiner baseball coach). I love Jimmy. I think he's a great coach. I have a lot of respect for him.
"I left and I thought, 'Have I done the right thing with my own kids? Could my own kids be in this kind of an atmosphere? Could they have been the last four or five years? Could there be this kind of an atmosphere, and have I shortchanged them?' I questioned myself when I left those games, and I still don't know."
