FOOTBALL: Much need confidence boost for Oak Hill

Oak Hill struggled against two of the best teams in the Pine Tree Conference's Class B division, Gardiner and Leavitt, in the first two weeks of the season.

After watching the film of both games, Oak Hill coach Bruce Nicholas saw plenty of things he like, but the Raiders had nothing to show for it in the win column.

"Even looking at the games we lost, there were stretches where we moved the ball," Nicholas said. "We look at the film and it's like, 'We are all right. We're all right.'"

Oak Hill saw some results on Saturday, rushing for 226 yards and two touchdowns in a 32-6 win over Nokomis. Adam Hathorne led the way with 143 yards on 13 carries, including a 40-yard TD run early in the third quarter.

"Our line needed to work on opening up holes and they opened up huge holes today," Hathorne said. "We didn't have splits (split ends) in the last two games and we did today and that made a big difference."

One of those splits Hathorne talked about was Josh Sirois, a former quarterback for Oak Hill. After nearly two seasons of struggling with the decision, Nicholas finally decided to go with Brett Turcotte over Sirois at quarterback. Sirois and fellow split end Ben Rines played a key role in the run game, and Sirois had a big role in the passing game as well.

The win gives Oak Hill a needed confidence boost. The Raiders sit at 1-2 with games at Winslow and at home vs. Mount Desert Island coming up.

"Going up to Winslow next week I think we'll go up there with some confidence," Nicholas said. "If we lose, we don't have confidence and they probably wax us. I think we can give them a game."
