Room for soccer in Gardiner
Is there room for soccer in Gardiner? I'm not simply talking about fielding boys and girls teams, that's been going on for a long time. The question is, can Gardiner field successful soccer teams along with strong football and field hockey programs?
Football and field hockey have long dominated the fall sports scene in the city and both are currently unbeaten. But soccer is doing OK, too. The boys are 5-1 after Monday's win over Mt. View while the girls are 2-3-1 with a couple of close losses. The top athletes in the school have gravitated toward football and field hockey and given their success who can blame them?
But there are good athletes playing soccer, too. Eric Goodwin, Mike Hersom, Zoe Fisk and Donnie Cray, to name a few, would all be welcome additions to any football team, but have chosen soccer. And what field hockey team couldn't use athletes like Stephanie Eaton, Ashley Abbott and Annah Kimball $ all soccer players. And there are probably a couple of dozen boys and girls in the school who could play field hockey, soccer or football who aren't playing anything at all.
In short, there are enough athletes to go around in a school of Gardiner's size. Winslow, with a smaller enrollment, has routinely fielded top teams in soccer, field hockey and football. In 2002 and 2003, the girls soccer and field hockey teams played for state titles. And in the last six years, football and boys soccer have each played in two state championship games.
