Races take shape around state
A third of the way into the season, high school soccer races are taking shape around the state.
On the girls side, Waterville appears primed for a Class A rematch against Gorham. The Purple Panthers are trouncing the competition so far in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference's Northern Division. They'll have to get past southern KVAC powers Mt. Ararat and Brunswick in the playoffs before they get a possible shot at Western Maine power Gorham which handed Waterville its only loss last season.
In Class B, Winslow has risen to the top of the KVAC despite graduating 12 players from last year's regional championship team. In the Class C Mountain Valley Conference, both Georges Valley and Mt. Abram are currently unbeaten and may not settle their differences until they meet in the final regular-season game Oct. 10.
On the boys side, last year's state champs, Greely (Class A), Falmouth (Class B), St. Dom's (Class C) and Richmond (Class D) are all unbeaten although Greely and Falmouth each have one tie. Eastern regional champion Brunswick will certainly be in the Class A mix as will Bangor. In Western Class A, there are a number of contenders including unbeaten Scarborough and Portland.
St. Dom's and Richmond, favorites in their respective classes, play one another Tuesday in Richmond.
