Richmond's invaluable bookends
Depending on the interest in golf or cross country, Richmond will field a team in those sports now and then, But the only real fall sport in this town of 3,000 or so residents along the Kennebec River is soccer.
And they play it with passion. Both boys and girls teams won Class D state titles last year, and the boys appear well on their way to another this season.
Tuesday, they knocked off defending Class C state champion St. Dom's of Auburn, 2-1, in well-played game full of action at both ends of the field. The Bobcats were led by seniors Andy Harrington, who plays forward, and Jason Brown, who Tuesday played sweeper.
"It's like having extra coaches on the field with those guys," Richmond coach Joe Scribellito said. "The senior leadership this year has really stuck out."
Both yell instructions and encouragement to their teammates throughout the game, and if they see someone dogging it, they'll get on them about that, too.
Brown often plays up front with Harrington. In fact, Monday he scored five goals in a win against Buckfield. But against a quality team like St. Dom's, and with an inexperienced defense, Scribellito moves Brown back to sweeper.
"Whatever helps the team," Brown said.
St. Dom's coach Matt Erickson even planned his halftime strategy around Brown, asking his players to pull him wide, then cross the ball opposite him.
The Bobcats have several good players, though. Eric Curtis and Josh Brown, captains along with Harrington and Jason Brown, played well at midfield while junior Eric Murirn scored a goal and created a ton of chances. Goalie Bruce Carver also stood out, particularly on a diving first-half save that appeared all but in the goal.
But there's a little inexperience in the lineup, too, not enough to be exposed against typical Class D opponents but against a well-coached, highly skilled team like St. Dom's. In those instances, it's nice to have senior bookends like Harrington and Brown on your side.
