FIELD HOCKEY: McNally firmly in charge
Gardiner Area High School field hockey coach Moe McNally was honored for her 30 years of coaching following her team's 5-1 win over rival Cony on Tuesday in Gardiner.
A boosters club member and parent presented her with a plaque and said a few words on what a "true inspiration you've been to my daughter."
Assistant coach Sharon Gallant, who played o McNally's first team 30 years ago, read a humorous list of 10 things I've learned from Coach McNally that included references to throwing clipboards and occasional salty language. She concluded by saying that Gardiner field hockey would not be what it is today without McNally in charge.
McNally appeared a little embarrassed by the display of affection from the fans at Somerville Field, her players and the Cony players and coaches. She even declined to speak. The veteran Gardiner coach doesn't mind reminiscing about past teams and players, but remains firmly grounded in the present. She's made no hint about leaving coaching and continues to look forward to every game and practice.
McNally's success can be traced to her enthusiasm for field hockey and the fact she holds her players accountable for their actions on and off the field.. She may have even mellowed over the years, but you wouldn't know it come game time. When it comes to coaching, McNally is old school and the fans and players in Gardiner wouldn't have it any other way.
