Field Hockey Heals are out

The final field hockey Heal points are out, and some intriguing matchups are on tap.

In Eastern B, defending state champ Waterville (8-6-0) will play Winslow (11-3-0) in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season.

And for the second consecutive season, the tournament game comes after the two teams played in the regular season finale.

Last season, Waterville won both the regular season finale and the tournament game. This fall, Winslow defeated Waterville 2-1 on Wednesday night. The two will play in Winslow at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

"I'm not overly surprised we're playing Waterville," Winslow coach Mary Beth Bourgoin said.

Nokomis (11-1-2) is the top seed and will play Hermon (5-9-0) in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

"It's nice to be first," Nokomis coach Katie Thompson said. "It is not what we expected at the beginning of the season. We've worked hard all season, and it's an added bonus."

In Eastern A, Messalonskee (13-1-0) earned the top seed, followed by seven-time defending Class A state champ Skowhegan (13-1-0), Gardiner (12-2-0) and Cony (11-3-0).

Mt. Blue (6-7-1) is seventh and will play Lawrence (5-7-2) in a first round game.

"I think this tournament will be a tough tournament for a lot of people," Skowhegan coach Paula Doughty said. "Usually, there's two or three good teams. This year there a lot of good teams. This will be a tough one."

First-year Messalonskee head coach Brenda Beckwith said she doesn't put much stock in Heal points.

"It's a nice compliment to the kids that they worked hard," she said. "But it's not a big deal. You have to win out with what we have. The only good thing about being No. 1 is that we don't have to travel."
