Mt. Blue-Skowhegan football leftovers
Senior Night in any sport is always emotional, but that was especially the case in Skowhegan Friday night, as the Indians dedicated the game to a friend who wasn't there.
Senior lineman Cody Williamson said the Indians were honoring Jonathan McGrail, a Skowhegan student who was 16 when he was injured in a car accident Feb. 11, 2007. McGrail died two days later.
"One of our buddies, Jon McGrail, we really wanted to send this game out to him," Williamson said. "It really meant a lot to us."
The line was the major reason for Skowhegan's 52-26 victory. Skowhegan ran for 487 yards on 44 offensive plays -- an average of 11.1 yards per carry.
Only once was the Skowhegan starting offense forced into a fourth-down situation. About halfway through the third quarter, with Skowhegan leading 40-12, Billy Clark was held to four yards on 3rd-and-8 and the Mt. Blue fans cheered heartily. From their own 39, the Indians went for it anyway. Clark got 11 yards, and Skowhegan drove for another touchdown.
Mt. Blue coach Gary Parlin thinks his team is in the playoffs because Brunswick defeated Mt. Ararat, 56-7. In fact, Parlin was very impressed with Brunswick in general. The Dragons defeated Mt. Blue, 33-14, in Week 6.
"I think Brunswick's the dark horse in this tournament, because they are athletic and fast," Parlin said. "I think they could give someone fits on a certain night."
