Raiders building tradition
One of the toughest things to do in high school sports is to build tradition where none has ever existed. That's the case with boys soccer at Oak Hill.
Head coach Joe Fletcher, now in his seventh year, is gaining, though. Saturday, the Raiders stopped Mountain Valley 5-4 to win a postseason game for the first time ever. They've notched eight wins so far, against five losses and two ties. In the past two season, they've only totaled seven wins.
The difference is more Oak Hill team members are playing soccer year round. In preseason, Fletcher mentioned four players that considered soccer their No. 1 sport and stay with it most of the year. That's progress in a school comprised of far-flung rural communties.
On Wednesday, the Raiders will face powferful Falmouth, a school which has 20-25 players going at it year round. A win would be monumental albeit unlikely. More than anything, it will show the Raiders where they've been and where they need to go. With 13 players returning next season the future is bright.
Congrats to the Oak Hill Raiders!
Joe Fletcher gives his team all the tools they need to succeed and they aer now seeing the rewards of hard work on the field. The Richmond Bobcats and I wish Oak Hill all the best in their upcoming game with Falmouth
