GIRLS SOCCER: Scoring in wind key
While the wind wasn't as bad as he expected, Winslow girls soccer coach didn't think anyone would score with the wind in their face.
When Winslow did, it was a huge boost.
Playing with the win in their face the entire first half, Winslow broke through when Kasey Paquette ripped in a cross from Julie Riordan with 8 minutes, 52 seconds left in the first half. It was the only goal Winslow would need in a 2-0 win over Erskine in an Eastern B quarterfinal.
"The wind to our back really helped (in the second half)," Wood said. "I didn't really expect any goals in the first half so to get that goal was like, 'Yeah.'
"So to have the wind at our back in the second half, I think we were able to carry momentum over."
Winslow had to wait a day to play their quarterfinal game. It was orginally scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed due to rain. The surface at Kennebec Savings Bank Field in Winslow was a little spongy, but play didn't suffer much because of it.
