Boothbay's Scott building a winner
It helps that Boothbay coach Nick Scott comes from a strong cross country background. The 2001 Monmouth Academy was part of two state championship teams with the Mustangs and went on to star with the University of Maine at Farmington.
Now in his third year at Boothbay, Scott has resurrected a program that, until this year, hadn't qualified for the state meet in 30 years.
"My first year of coach we came in dead last in the Mountain Valley Conference," Scott said. "Last year, we were second to last."
This year, the Seahawks won the MVC title as well as the Western Regional. They faltered a bit at the states Saturday $ it's tough to stay up three weeks in a row $ finishing second to Monmouth.
Scott deflected credit for his program to a couple of his runners.
"Once you get it rolling, it becomes contagious," he said.
But he teaches eighth grade, a help, no doubt, in generating enthusiasm at the lower levels.
"I have a great passion for the sport," Scott said. "I'm lucky to have a couple of catalysts who have bought into this idea of training hard."
