GIRLS SOCCER: Waterville-Brunswick leftovers

Waterville and Brusnwick each finished the regular season undefeated in Eastern A girls soccer. They played in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A championship game, and Waterville won, 2-0. Wednesday's regional final between the teams was better, and what you'd hope for in a matchup between two unbeaten teams.

Waterville fell behind for the first time all season, but scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to pull out a 2-1 victory.

Waterville appeared to be much deeper than Brunswick. Waterville coach Ian Wilson was shuttling players in and out all game, sometimes just to have the assistants tell them something, other times for a quick break. Brunswick used about 13-14 players for the game.

Still, the Dragons did seem to have life in their legs near the end. Hilary Champagne, who scored the Brunswick goal, was able to beat her defender down the right sideline midway through the second half. Champagne sent a nice pass to the left post, but Brunswick's Rebekka Miller had to head the ball on the run and it went over the net.

Brunswick was missing Lucy Morrell, who coach Martyn Davison called the team's best player. Morrell, a senior midfielder, missed the entire season with an injury.

"Lucy tore her ACL up here in a preseason friendly," Davison said. "I don't want to focus too much on Lucy. The rest of the players did a great job. But I felt we just lacked that link from midfield to the strikers. Waterville's a great team. Let's hope they go on and win it for the East."

A win for Waterville in the state final against Gorham Saturday would be the school's first since Waterville won five consecutive Class A titles from 1980-84. The Purple Panthers have lost the state final five times since then (1985, 1997-99 and last year to Gorham).

"Ever since preseason started -- actually, since last year -- I can't get it out of my head," Waterville senior keeper Taylor Hart said. "I think about it all the time. I just thought about (how) today is my last day on this field, and I want my last game for soccer to be the best. I'm really hoping for it."
