BOYS SOCCER: Katahdin heard a tall tale

Katahdin boys soccer coach Matt Lindsay admitted to having limited knowledge about the Richmond team he will face in the Class D state championship game on Saturday.

One thing he heard, he was really curious about.

"The kids heard their goalie was 6-10," Lindsay said.

Not quite.

Richmond goalie Bruce Carver is big, but not 6-feet, 10-inches big. On the Bobcats basketball roster Carver is listed at 6-3.

After talking it over, Lindsay and I came to the realization that his players were probably talking about former Richmond boys basketball star Marc Zaharchuk, who graduated in the spring.

Wow! What a game. Little David (Katahdin) going up against (Goliath) Richmond. Rcihmond had the talent, size, and experiance but that is not to say that Katahdin didn't, but it was obvious from the onset what the probiable outcome would be. Just watching Richmond at times would make your jaw drop in amazement at what they could do.

But Katahdin. What an amazing group of kids. They worked and played with pride, grit , and determination. The Katahdin talent is not singled out by any one player receiving honor for being top dog. The boys play as a combination of the defence creating for the offence. The offence itself has great defence. I have heard that both of the Rodgerson boys who play defence take the ball fom one end of the field to the other with complete control and shoot on goal or create another play for the offence.

Behind every good team is a coach and his support staff. Coach Lindsy has done an outstanding job with the boys. I would have to say he is more than a coach to them. He has become their friend.

This group of kids, coaches, support staff, and families have made Katahdin High School history. This is their first Soccer State Championship in school history. This win has eaily rivaled any basketball championship that the school is well know for.

My congratulations to the players and coaches of KHS.
