Katahdin wouldn't be denied

A more-tightly called game at Saturday's State Class D boys soccer championship would likely have favored Richmond for a couple of reasons.

First, it would have taken away Katahdin's aggressive play. And second, it may have resulted in a Richmond penalty kick or two. Neither happened as officials let the teams play.
Katahdin earned its 5-4 victory, though, the first boys state title in school history. Trailing 4-2 in the second half, the underdog Cougars stormed into Richmond's end of the field over the final 30 minutes, at the same time exposing some of the Bobcats' defensive weaknesses.
The Cougars simply had too many good players in too many positions and for most of the game beat the Bobcats to the ball. They did not, however, have a player the caliber of Richmond's Andy Harrington who Katahdin coach Matt Lindsay called the best his team has ever faced. Harrington scored three goals and added an assist but could just as easily scored five or six given the chances he created.
Richmond got predictable performances from Harrington, Josh and Jason Brown, Eric Murrin and goalie Bruce Carver. They also got strong games from Tim Bradford, Tommy Carter, Nick Woods and Mike Christie, but as Jason Brown said after the game: "It was a hard-played game, both teams played good, but I don't know, I think they wanted it more."
The Bobcats were making their fourth straight state title game appearance, having won last year. A town and school known for soccer, Richmond has won nine state championships. Before Saturday, Katahdin had never even played in a state title game. In some respects, it's easy to see why the Cougars may have wanted it more.

Wow! What a game. Little David (Katahdin) going up against (Goliath) Richmond. Rcihmond had the talent, size, and experiance but that is not to say that Katahdin didn't, but it was obvious from the onset what the probiable outcome would be. Just watching Richmond at times would make your jaw drop in amazement at what they could do.

But Katahdin. What an amazing group of kids. They worked and played with pride, grit , and determination. The Katahdin talent is not singled out by any one player receiving honor for being top dog. The boys play as a combination of the defence creating for the offence. The offence itself has great defence. I have heard that both of the Rodgerson boys who play defence take the ball fom one end of the field to the other with complete control and shoot on goal or create another play for the offence.

Behind every good team is a coach and his support staff. Coach Lindsy has done an outstanding job with the boys. I would have to say he is more than a coach to them. He has become their friend.

This group of kids, coaches, support staff, and families have made Katahdin High School history. This is their first Soccer State Championship in school history. This win has eaily rivaled any basketball championship that the school is well know for.

My congradulations to the players and coaches of KHS.

I was able to attend the game and I thought the officials called Katahdin very tighly and Richmond loosly as far a hand balls and pushing calls.
