Winthrop celebrates in the mud

The muddy mess that was the football field behind the Winthrop Grade School turned out to be a terrific place to celebrate on Saturday.

As time ran off the clock in the Ramblers' 34-0 win over Lisbon in the Campbell Conference Class C championship game, Winthrop defensive back Andrew Smithgall laid flat on his back and did a "mud angel."

The players, covered in mud, hung out on the field for several minutes after being presented with the championship plaque. Seniors posed for pictures, defensive end Kevin Hart (covered in mud) tried to hug any adult who would accept his offer, and a few other players took turns trying to throw each other in the puddles on the field.

Winthrop head coach Joel Stoneton, already soaked from the second half downpour, was dosed with a Gatorade bucket with 41 seconds left.
