FOOTBALL: A look ahead at Winthrop-John Bapst
The Winthrop and John Bapst football teams will deviate from normal routine and shift their practices to turf field this week in anticipation of playing Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium for the Class C state championship.
The Ramblers (11-0) will practice at Kents Hill School on Wednesday and Thursday. Kents Hill debuted its new FieldTurf this season.
John Bapst (10-1) will practice at Hampden Academy all week. Neither team has played on turf this season.
Winthrop coach Joel Stoneton said Monday that the team received the game plan for the Crusaders.
"We just devoured all the film that we could," Winthrop quarterback Jordan Conant said. "Coach has a great plan set up. I'm going through as much as I can. No matter what, it's our last week. We're ready for a good week."
Some tidbits when stacking up the Ramblers and Crusaders:
• Winthrop is playing in its first state title game since 2000. The Ramblers beat Maine Central Institute to win the title 22-0.
• It's been a longer drought for the Crusaders, who haven't won a state title since 1976. John Bapst shared the title that year with Marshwood and Jay.
• John Bapst has scored 374 points while Winthrop has piled up 384. But it's the defense that separates the teams.
The Crusaders have allowed 220 points for an average of 20 a game. The Ramblers have given up 40 points for an average of 3.6 a game.
• John Bapst has scored 40 or more points in four of its last six games. It didn't score 40 in any of its first five games, although it came close in a 40-39 loss to Bucksport in the season opener.
• The Ramblers have seven shutouts this season. John Bapst has one.
• The Crusaders have won four games by seven points or less. Winthrop has won every game but one by 16 or more.
• Seven years ago, in 2001, John Bapst was in the midst of a four-season losing skid.
