FOOTBALL: Helping hand
Brad Greenleaf said the competition with himself and Jordan McGowan for the starting quarterback job on the Skowhegan football team this summer was intense.
"We've known each other for a while and we both knew we had starting potential," the Skowhegan senior said. "We both were looking at each pass like, 'Oh, his pass was a little better,' or 'my pass was a little better,' or 'his block was a little better, I have to step it up.' It went play by play, pass by pass to see how was better."
Greenleaf eventually earned the starting nod, but an injury in Week 2 knocked him out of the lineup. McGowan took over as the fulltime quarterback, and has been terrific in the playoffs. In three playoff victories, McGowan has competed 12 of 22 passes for 247 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
Greenleaf has returned to action on a limited basis, and wishes he could take snaps at quarterback again, but is happy for McGowan and has played a key role in his success.
"Brad has helped me out a lot," McGowan said. "He's helped me with my footwork and with making reads. It's gone pretty well."
