Scott Martin has covered high school sports at the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel for the eight years. A graduate of Lake Region High School and the University of Maine in Orono, Martin has worked for these newspapers for nearly 10 years. Martin also coaches middle school baseball and basketball in his spare time.

Class C: John Bapst wins it

Derek Smith killed the clock by taking a knee and the John Bapst Crusaders beat Winthrop High School 21-14 to win the Class C state championship at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.

Winthrop turned the ball over on downs with just over a minute remaining.

Winthrop just blocked a field goal attempt and takes over at its own 27 with just over two minutes remaining.

Chase Huckestein scored on an 8-yard run the Crusaders recovered their own fumble at the 8 to take a 21-14 lead in the fourth quarter.

And John Bapst just recovered a Winthrop fumble at the Winthrop 33.

Bill Stewart reports: Jordan Conant has completed 11 of 14 passes for 151 yards for Winthrop as the Class C state final is tied at 14 heading into the fourth.

Joe Morey has 81 yards rushing for Winthrop, while Derek Wetherbee has 102 yard rushing for John Bapst.

Skylar Whaley scored on a 4-yard run after a 41-yard pass from Jordan Conant to Jason Raymond as Winthrop tied the game at 14 late in the third quarter.

Derek Smith just threw a touchdown pass to Bill Wetherbee to give John Bapst a 14-7 lead in the third quarter.

Bill Stewart reports: Derek Smith threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Chase Huckestein late in the second half as John Bapst tied the score at 7.

For Winthrop, which is playing without running back Riley Cobb, Joey Morey is the leading rusher with 15 carries for 74 yards. Jordan Conant has competed 7 of 9 passes for 83 yards, a touchdown and an interception, and Jason Raymond has four receptions for 56 yards and a TD.

For John Bapst, Derek Smith has competed 7 of 12 passes for 90 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Bill Stewart reports: Jordan Conant threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jason Raymond to give Winthrop a 7-0 lead with 7:19 left in the second quarter.

Bill Stewart reports: The Class C state final is scoreless after one, thanks to a big hit by Skylar Whaley on fourth and goal. Whaley hit Bill Wetherbee to force a turnover on downs with 3:47 left in the first.

Joey Morey leads the Rambler offense with 15 yards rushing and Whaley had 13 yards rushing.

Wetherbee has 32 yards rushing for John Bapst.

The Class C state championship game between Winthrop and John Bapst is underway and the Ramblers just made a goal-line stand to keep John Bapst off the board.
