At the very end, a positive note

It's often the little things that eventually mean the most in high school sports, perhaps offering a word of encouragement to a teammate or even helping an opponent up.

There were a lot of tears shed after Winthrop lost for the first time this season, 21-14, to John Bapst in the Class C state championship game. The Ramblers weren't looking for second place and took the loss especially hard. Senior Jake Steele was no exception. But after he let go on the shoulder of a relative, he pulled himself togetherand did the same for the team.
Just about the same time the Ramblers looked as if they were going to drift away toward the locker rooms near Fitzpatrick Stadium, Steele rallied the team into a huddle. There were words of encouragement and an acknowledgment of their runner-up plaque. These are the types of actions that reveal character and it said a lot about Steele and his teammates. It was a good way to end an otherwise disappointing day.
