COLLEGES: A look at area high school graduates
While winter sports are in full swing, there's one local athlete who is still competing in a fall sport on Dec. 5. It's Meg Willette, a Waterville grad who now plays soccer at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn.
Willette's team plays tonight against Trinity Christian of Illinois in an NAIA national semifinal. Lee recently knocked off Martin Methodist on penalty kicks. Martin Methodist had ousted Lee from the tournament the past three years.
The Lady Flames are 22-1-1, and Willette has 12 goals and five assists for 29 points in 24 games. She is tied for third on the team in goals and in fourth in points.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Skowhegan grad Megan Smith is now starting at Southern New Hampshire University. SNHU is 2-3 through five games, but those three losses are by a combined seven points. Smith is averaging 7.6 points and 4.8 rebounds in less than 19 minutes per game. She's also 15 of 25 from the field, a 60 percent clip.
One of Smith's teammates at SNHU is Magdala Johnson, who averaged 0.8 points in 13 games for the University of Maine last season. Johnson is averaging 2.6 points and 2.6 rebounds for SNHU.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
I mentioned last week in this space that Maranacook grad Will Bardaglio seemed to have a role for instant offense off the bench as a freshman at Colby-Sawyer. Well, Bardaglio got his first start Tuesday night and had 19 points in 37 minutes as the Chargers defeated Plymouth State, 87-83.
Bardaglio's longtime teammate Ryan Martin got a chance to show his stuff for UMaine Thursday night. In a 126-50 win over UMaine-Presque Isle, Martin had 20 points and five assists in 21 minutes.
