Cony's effort strong
Cony girls basketball fans may have been disappointed in the team's home loss Wednesday night to Edward Little under first-year coach Karen Sirois. After all, her predecessor and former coach, Paul Vachon, didn't lose 10 home games in 23 years.
But fans had to be happy about the way the Rams played defense for Sirois. They were running and diving all over the floor and played until the final buzzer in a 49-36 loss. For the first time in several years, the Rams don't have much size, and as yet have not found a reliable penetrator who can set up her teammates. That made for tough going against an EL team that played a tough matchup zone.
And the Eddies have an excellent ballhandler in Kirsten Prue which negated some of Cony's pressure. They desperately miss the size of 6-foot-1 Rachael Mack and the passing and shooting of Shelby Pelkey, both of whom graduated last season. But the offense will eventually develop, and it's nice to see the defensive effort is still there.
