Basketball with a great cause at Valley this Saturday

This will be in the girls basketball notes in the newspapers later this week, but I wanted to mention this here so people could know about it sooner. It's a charity basketball night at Valley High School in Bingham.

Gordon Hartwell, the Valley girls basketball coach, said Valley will be hosting Jay at 5:30 p.m., Saturday.

Hartwell said all proceeds over the cost of officials will go to the Jimmy V Foundation in memory of Jean Poirier, who died of cancer in May.

Poirier was a 1,000-point scorer and played on the boys basketball team at Valley from 1975-78. He was also a longtime state trooper.

"He was an excellent basketball player, and just a great guy," Hartwell said. "He loved basketball, absolutely loved basketball. He went to everything."

I encourage everyone to attend that game. I played against Poirier when I played for Carrabec and he and I developed a friendship through sports. He was a hard-worker who played the game correctly and loved playing for Valley.
I have been involved with the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic for several years here in North Carolina and encourage everyone to give in the name of Poirier.
