Well-deserved technical

Basketball fans have seen it dozens of times. A player receives a call he doesn't like, and instead of handing the ball to the official, he places it on the floor and walks away.

It's not difficult to figure what's going through a player's head when this happens. It's a slightly subtler way of saying (fill in the blank). It happened Tuesday night in a high school boys game in Winthrop between Madison and the host Ramblers. After a violation, a Madison player conspicuously placed the ball on the court and walked away. Veteran official Gary Parlin promptly assessed the player a technical foul.

There was a little grumbling and a few surprised expressions from fans who are used to seeing players T-d up for more egregious behavior, but it struck me as precisely the right call.

High school players shouldn't be showing up officials and getting away with it. This time they didn't, and there's a pretty good chance this player or anyone else paying attention won't do it again.

The Ref was out of line!!! If placing the ball on the floor was showing him up, then his (and your) skin is very thin and he has no life. Having played and officiated, I think Parlin was looking for notoriety, or his 15 minutes. What a sorry individual! Would both of you be happy if the player had humbly bowed, and groveled at Parlin's feet, as he handed the ball to him. If anyone was shown up, or put upon, it would be the players, fans, and supporters who suffered for Parlin's being out of line!
