Cheerleading season heating up
No team sport has as few competitions as cheerleading. The schools have the conference meet, the regional meet and (if they're lucky) the state championship meet. If they're really lucky, they'll move on to the New England championships.
That's four counting competitions at most, and most of it is packed into a short time. The Mountan Valley Conference championships were Saturday, and the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championships are Monday at the Augusta Civic Center.
After the KVACs, those teams have only four days to tweak their routines before the regionals, which are Jan. 24 at the Augusta Civic Center and Bangor Auditorium.
The following teams in the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel coverage area are scheduled to compete in the regionals, along with their order of competition:
Eastern A: Skowhegan (1st), Lawrence (3rd), Mt. Blue (5th), Nokomis (6th), Cony (9th), Messalonskee (15th). The meet will begin at 9 a.m. in Augusta.
Eastern B: Erskine (1st), Mt. View (6th), Winslow (7th), Waterville (13th), Gardiner (17th), Maine Central Institute (19th). The meet will begin at 2:15 p.m. in Bangor.
