Eastern regional tidbits
Gardiner junior Matt DelGallo remains unbeaten in Maine competition and appears headed for his third straight state championship.
DelGallo won the KVAC title last week at 125 pounds, but wrestled at 119 at the Eastern regional and breezed through the competition Saturday. DelGallo weighed in at 120.2 pounds, eight tenths under the allowable limit.
"I planned on going 19 the whole (year)," DelGallo said. "It's just kind of hard for me to lose weight in the middle of the season."
DelGallo said he feels stronger right now than most 119 pounders and hopes that will give him an edge at the New England championships.
Cony's Will Lundquist, who lost to DelGallo at 125 last week, won the regional title at that weight Saturday, pinning Brewer's Stephen Desjardins to avenge a loss at last year's regionals.
"I feel pretty good because I've never won a tournament before," the junior said.
Morse's Spencer Chipman and Skowhegan's Dillon White staged one of the meet more exciting matches at 160. White scored a reversal to take a 6-5 lead late in the match but Chipman tied it with a late escape to send it into overtime where he won 8-6 with a takedown.
Skowhegan Area High School did a nice job hosting the regional which ended just before 6 p.m. The matches moved crisply on three mats, announcers kept everyone informed and there was plenty of food and drink on hand at the snack bar and in the cafeteria.
