GIRLS BASKETBALL: Who's hot, who's not heading into playoffs
You wouldn't know it by looking at the temperature, but basketball season is almost over and the quarterfinals start in 11 days. Here's a look at some teams that are surging and struggling as they head into the postseason.
WHO'S HOT
Skowhegan: The Indians have won nine in a row, and have been at the top of the Eastern A standings the last two weeks. Those nine wins have been by an average of almost 16 points. The Indians are also getting consistent offense: In each game of the streak, they've scored between 47 and 60 points.
Cony: From a 3-6 start, the Rams have now won six of their last seven. The one loss in that streak was to Edward Little, which was 14-2 entering the week. A win over a strong Oxford Hills team is probably the biggest sign that Cony can be a factor in the tournament.
Carrabec: This is a team that went 9-63 over the last four seasons, and is now 12-5 after Monday's convincing win over Mt. Abram. Almost as impressive is that this team was 2-4 at one point. So the Cobras have now won 10 of their last 11, and that one loss was by two points to Winthrop.
Winthrop: Speaking of the Ramblers, they are also 12-5, and that's coming off a 4-14 record last winter. First-year coach Ray Convery, who won over 300 games coaching the Ramblers in his first stint with the team, has done a fine job with this group. Winthrop's five losses have been by a total of 17 points, so the Ramblers can clearly play with anyone in the Mountain Valley Conference.
Valley: The Cavaliers have now won 10 in a row, including two big wins over Vinalhaven this weekend, to improve to 14-2. Valley should go in no worse than second in the Western D tournament.
WHO'S NOT
Mt. Abram: The Roadrunners struggled in their final three quarters against Jay on Saturday and in their final three-plus quarters against Carrabec on Monday. Mt. Abram has shown it can follow bad games with great games, and coach Doug Lisherness has a strong track record of getting his team ready for the tournament. Mt. Abram certainly has enough talent to make a run in Augusta, and no team is even close to unbeatable in the Western C bracket.
Nokomis: Once 5-2, the Warriors have now lost seven of their last nine. Slow starts have been a recurring problem -- the Warriors were down 14-1 to Cony, 11-0 to Skowhegan and 12-2 to Messalonskee. Of course, Nokomis also starts two freshmen, a sophomore and two juniors, and about 99 percent of the time, you'll find that young teams are inconsistent. The Warriors have a chance to get some Heal points tonight against Lawrence, and are still a dangerous draw for anyone in the tournament.
