BOYS HOCKEY: Seniors spark Cony offense
Messalonskee coach Mike Latendresse shouted across the hallway outside the lockerrooms at the Kennebec Ice Arena in Hallowell.
"Two great goals you scored Ben Hubert," Latendresse yelled while I interviewed Hubert. "I very much don't like you."
Latendresse, of course, was kidding around with Hubert, who scored two goals and added an assist in Cony's 3-1 win over Messalonskee in an Eastern A game Wednesday night.
Hubert, and fellow senior Josh Zayac have given opponents plenty of reason to notice them this year, combining for 23 goals to help the Rams to an 8-7-0 record.
Hubert was pretty much a known commodity coming into the season. He scored 15 goals and dished out assists for the Rams.
The surprise may be Zayac, who has 14 goals and eight assists this season.
"He's been a great forward for us this year and it is a great surprise to see him step up the way he has," Cony coach B.J. Dostie said. "There is no panic around the net. He knows what he is going to do and he knows where he has to get the puck and I think that has helped slow things down for him."
Zayac and Hubert's excellence has helped the Rams shake off their 1-4-0 start.
"Offensively, Hubert and Zayac, they have done awesome," Latendresse said.
