Fans light up Cony gym

Hannah Fenwick heard it all night.

Every time the 6-foot Mt. Ararat forward touched the ball, a boisterous Cony student section would start yelling. The fans wouldn't stop until Fenwick gave up the ball.

Her reaction?

"They were on my back all game," she said, "but I dealt with it."

She 'dealt with it' by grabbing 11 rebounds and blocking three shots to go along with four points in a 45-42 Eastern A prelim victory Tuesday at Cony.

Fenwick was mostly invisible in the first half after she picked up her second foul with three minutes, 42 seconds left in the first quarter.

But she came alive in the decisive third-quarter with her team trailing 17-15 at the half. Fenwick scored all four of her points in the quarter, grabbed five rebounds and blocked a shot to help the Eagles (9-10) turn a two-point deficit into a four-point lead (32-28).

"We had the height advantage, we just had to get it in the paint," Fenwick said.

Speaking of the crowd, the gym was packed Tuesday night, and in the fourth quarter the place was simply electric.

A strong contingent of Mt. Ararat fans started chanting "MTA! MTA! MTA" in the final minute but were quickly met with a "Let's go Cony!" response from the home crowd.

Each section tried to out-do the other, creating quite a buzz in the gym.
