Forest Hills player gets early tourney experience
They don't really keep records for this sort of thing, but it's safe to say that Forest Hills guard Evan Worster will be one of the youngest players in the history of the Maine high school basketball tournament when he takes the Augusta Civic Center court on Saturday.
An eighth grader, Worster will be 13 years, four months and eight days old when the top-seeded Tigers play No. 8 Buckfield in the Western Class D quarterfinals on Saturday at 1 p.m., Forest Hills coach Anthony Amero said.
It's not uncommon for eighth graders to play at the varsity level in Class D. The smaller schools sometimes need the younger players to fill out the roster. Worster has been a contributor to the Tigers' success this season. The 5-foot-8 guard averages 5.2 points per game and is a starter.
I CONGRATULATE EVAN WORSTER FOR BEING A STARTER AND CONTRIBUTOR TO THE FOREST HILLS HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM. HAVING COACHED AT SMALL, RURAL SCHOOLS AT VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL AND FOREST HILLS HIGH SCHOOL, THE NEED TO USE 8TH GRADERS TO KEEP THEIR ATHLETIC TEAMS GOING IS A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE. SEVERAL TEAMS IN THE EAST-WEST CONFERENCE HAVE USED 8TH GRADERS IN THE PAST TO FIELD COMPETITIVE SPORTS TEAMS.
FOR EVAN TO BE A STARTER AS AN 8TH GRADER SHOWS HIS DESIRE TO COMPETE WITH OLDER PLAYERS. BEST
OF LUCK TO EVAN AND HIS TEAM IN THE WESTERN MAINE REGIONAL CLASS D TOURNAMENT. "KEEP THE FAITH."
