BOYS HOCKEY: A strategic -- in more ways than one -- timeout
Waterville boys Dennis Martin called timeout with 10 minutes, 17 seconds remaining in the Panthers' Eastern A semifinal game vs. Bangor on Saturday. The Panthers were about to begin a 5-on-3 power play, which would last 1:09, and were trailing by a goal.
Martin said he called the timeout to set some things up, but also wanted to give his special teams unit a rest.
"We were down a goal and it was a 5-on-3 situation. You don't know if you are going to get another chance," Martin said. "I tried to rest a couple of guys up because they were going to be out there for a while."
The move paid off as Waterville scored less than a minute into the 5-on-3 when Nick DeBlois scored to tie the game at 3. Waterville, which trailed 3-0 in the first period, went on to win the game 4-3 to advance to Tuesday's regional final against Lewiston.
Rest was especially key during the time out because Waterville was playing shorthanded. Top defenseman Shawn Lee suffered a dislocated right shoulder the previous week in practice. His absence forced forward Ian Rowe to move back to defense and played extended minutes.
Lee's status for Tuesday's game is still uncertain.
