Mack proves her worth
There were a few doubters when Cony High School's Rachael Mack swept all the major high school basketball awards last season, including Miss Maine Gatorade and Miss Maine Basketball.
Certainly, Cony coach Paul Vachon believed in his quiet center. But outside Augusta, many fans thought Morse guard Jill Henrikson was the state's best player. Henrikson had the more flamboyant game, often isolating on the wing for drives to the basket or pull-up jumpers. Mack rarely even posted up for the Rams, scoring most of her points on 12-15 foot jump shots or offensive rebounds.
Turns out, both players are pretty good. Mack plays for Colby this year and was named Rookie of the Year on Friday by the Maine Women's Basketball Association. Henrikson, who attends Bowdoin, joined Mack on the All-Rookie team. The team includes all Div. III players in the state. Mack led the New England Small College Athletic Association in blocked shots and field goal percentage, was fifth in rebounding and 18th in scoring.
Last week, it was Henrikson who won out over Mack when she was named NESCAC Rookie of the Year. What was a good rivalry in high school has continued into college. These two should be among the best in the conference over the next three years.
